What is Collaborative Edge™?

It is a question we are asked more often these days, and one worth answering clearly.

Collaborative Edge™ is the point at which collective performance exceeds what any individual could achieve working alone. It is not a technique or a tool.  It is created when people in a team are genuinely connected, genuinely honest with each other, and genuinely committed to something beyond their own contribution.

When teams find their Collaborative Edge™, people contribute more fully. Open conversations happen earlier and land better. Ideas surface that would otherwise have stayed quiet. Trust holds even when things get hard.

Most teams have not found it yet. Many do not know it is missing.

Where the idea comes from

Lucy Kidd and Anni Townend developed the concept through years of working with leaders and executive teams navigating change. They noticed a pattern: the organisations that performed best over time were not necessarily those with the most talented individuals. They were the ones where people had learned to work together in a particular way.

Not perfectly. Not without friction. But with enough trust, enough honesty, and enough care for each other that the friction became productive rather than corrosive.

The question became: what creates those conditions? What are the mindsets and behaviours that make this quality of collaboration possible?

The answer, over time, became the Collaboration Equation.

Curiosity, Care and Courage

At the heart of the Collaboration Equation are three behavioural mindsets: Curiosity, Care and Courage. These are not values to be displayed on a wall. They are practices. Ways of showing up that, taken together, create the conditions for Collaborative Edge™.

Curiosity

Curiosity is what keeps a team open. Open to learning, to challenge, to perspectives that differ from their own. A curious leader asks questions they do not already know the answer to. They stay interested in the people around them, in what they are experiencing, what they are thinking, and where they might be stuck.

Curiosity disrupts assumptions. It creates space. Without it, teams narrow.

Care

Care is about impact. It means paying attention to how your behaviour lands on others, and choosing to adjust when it is not serving the team. It is the quality that makes people feel genuinely seen and heard, rather than processed or managed.

Care is not softness. It is the foundation of psychological safety. Teams where people feel cared for take more considered risks, raise concerns earlier, and stay more committed through difficulty.

Courage

Courage is the behaviour most often missing when teams get stuck. It is the willingness to say the thing that needs saying, to challenge a direction that feels wrong, to have the conversation that keeps being avoided.

Without courage, Curiosity and Care can become a warm but ultimately comfortable culture that does not stretch or develop. Courage is what makes the other two powerful.

What Collaborative Edge™ feels like in practice

When a leadership team has found its Collaborative Edge™, there are things you notice.

Meetings feel different. There is more candour and less performance. People disagree, and the disagreement is productive. Decisions get made and held. When something goes wrong, the response is collective rather than defensive.

People contribute more of themselves. Not because they have been told to, but because they feel it is safe to. Because they trust that their perspective matters and will be taken seriously.

The work gets better. Not just the output, but the experience of doing it together.

Why it matters now

We are working in conditions that make collaboration harder than it has ever been. Hybrid working, rapid change, competing pressures, the relentless pace of technology. Many teams are nominally connected but genuinely fragmented. Many leaders are carrying more than they can name.

In that context, Collaborative Edge™ is not a nice-to-have. It is a leadership capability that organisations cannot afford to leave undeveloped.

The leaders whose teams find it are not necessarily the most naturally gifted communicators or the most experienced coaches. They are the ones who are willing to be curious, careful and courageous in how they lead. Who take the quality of their relationships as seriously as the quality of their results.

Because over time, those two things are not separate.

Finding your Collaborative Edge™

Collaborative Edge™ is not a destination. It is something a team finds, and then has to keep finding, as people change, as challenges shift, as the work evolves.

What it requires, consistently, is the kind of leadership that creates the conditions for it. Leadership built on Curiosity, Care and Courage.

That is what Collaboration Equation exists to support.
